It illustrates how to have FOW without the need to have lights on tokens. it uses simple on/off zoned areas.

When I place a light source on a map with no masks, it drops a gray circle. How do I 'dim' the whole map and then have light sources brighten certain areas?

You need a mask covering the area to be affected by a light.
