Is there a way to make a creature with an image that is just see through? That way you could give it no border, and it wouldn't interfere with the view of the map for the players, but they could double click on a 5' square as they enter a room, and it would pop up with the "description" of the room.

Yes, create an image with a transparent background with nothing in the foreground. Then assign that transparent image to the creature. Just make sure it is out of initiative, or combats would be strange having a floor tile attack someone (or add to the fun/mystery) :p

Open up an image editing program.
Create new image using transparent setting of perhaps 50x50.
    Save

    alternatively, here is one.

right-click on the image then Save As

Thanks. The only image editing software I have is paint, and I don't think I can make a transparent image that way.

You can download Gimp. It is a very good advanced image editing software that you can get for free.
