Ok D20pro fires up and runs in demo mode. I go in as a judge. I click on the map button. I click on create. I select 'From File' and hit the check box. The box greys out with a 'please wait' message.

And it stays there doing nothing.

Machine: Vista 32bit, 4 gig ram, proc quad 9300, 30" monitor, 3 19" monitors, two nvidia cards.

Application is running on main screen (30").

I have uninstalled and reinstalled latest java runtime. Vista is update todate on patches. Video drivers are latest.

    What next?

Is this the normal support response or is the developer on vacation or something?

    Evil Kerek,

I do apologize for you not getting a response yet. I have been unavailable the past couple weeks, and I know some of the others have been out as well. I have tried to recreate this but to no avail. I am going to try it on Vista as soon as I can. Other developers have Vista machines, so I will get them to look into it.

This happens every time for you?

When you try to create maps not from file does it work?

Thanks for the reply! I certainly understand people being away - just didn't want my trial lic running out before we could address whatever issue I'm having. At $30 a personI need to know it's going to be 100% on my setup.

    - tested from clipboard - works! (so I have a work around)
    - tested from raw - works! (not really surprising)

We're going to do some more testing after creating some maps from clipboard. My biggest concern is hitting something related to this error somewhere else that doesn't have a work around.

Are you aware of anyone else using this on a 4 screen system? Just trying to think of everything that is unusual on my setup - that's really the only thing I can think of. I have a mirrored drive using nivida's media shield plus two other drives and a lot of network drive mappings. Wonder if it's scanning the driver letters or something.

I reconfirmed there are no orphaned java installs anywhere - I have only the latest rev.

I must admit you are the first I have heard of using 4 screens. I do not have a setup to even test that.

Not sure if it has anything to do with the drive ton of drive letters, I can do that on my system tonight, so I can see if that causes some issues.

I am trying to duplicate this issue for you man, but so far no luck on my end... sorry to say... I will hunt this down for you though.

Oh and as for pricing, the DM can "loan" his licnese to one of the players. So if you are wanting to run on 6 computers you really only need 5 licenses. A DM allows its license to be logged in as a player.

Plus if you have some people that are at the same place they can share the laptop, and just use a couple mice. That is what I do at my home groups, we have a DM laptop, and two other laptops on the table. So I am using only 2 licenses for support my players. Just some thoughts.

That wasn't really a price complaint - D20Pro looks good but so have many of the others we have tried - and we've purchased one just to find out it has lots of issues so it's made us gunshy.

Biggest problem we're having right now is connecting - I can't find a definitive 'forward these ports' anywhere in the docs. I am assuming the ports only need to be forwarded on the GMs IP. I have forwarded 10101 as well as 1625 that I saw mentioned in another thread but we can't hook up.

And I also see the docs are lagging behind the software (heh..pretty normal). I'm having trouble figuring out how to transfer control of a token to a player and the docs aren't real clear on it. How DO you assign ownership?

Sharing a laptop isn't really an option here - all my players live somewhere else.

From a debug stand point, I'm happy to do whatever I can to help find it - if you want to pop some windows or write some logs with a debug rev, let me know (yeah, I code for a living so I know what it's like chasing bugs remotely).

I can understand about being gunshy and I cannot blame you. Nobody wants to buy a product and lend up with some like "King of Limbo"

To assign ownership for a creature to a player do the following:
Right click the creature: from that menu go to Alter->Owner
A window will popup and you can select which player owns it (based on names given at log in)
Or you can highlight the creature or creatures and press o and select the player

http://help.mindgene.com/getting-started/creatures Look at the section GM menu and then opoen up the menu diagram to help you find options.

As for people logging into you check this site for help about port forwarding http://portforward.com/routers.htm
YOu should just need to set the port forwarding to the DM's local IP address. Give your players your public IP address which can be accessed in the judges section What is My IP
Are you able to connect a player to your DM in your local network and only having issues connecting from outside your local network?

We are updating our help documents now... so keep an eye on them as we update and add more information.

Actually forwarding the ports isn't a problem - can you confirm for me which ports need to be forwarded?

Definitely not new to hosting servers (I've ran Quake servers, BF1942, Klooge, etc) so I've fought this fight many times. I wish hamacchi was faster but it introduces so much slow down that the maps are taking forever to transfer.

Oh good God how did I miss the alter menu. 8) Thanks.

The only port you should need to forward is whatever port you choose when you started the DM. Default is 10101.

Good news? I was able to replicate the create map from file error on one of my machines. Now that I can recreate the error I can begin debugging the error. Please stand by

That's good to hear - unfortunately we still can't get it to connect throught the firewall.

Does the client need to forward the port, i.e. is this client-server or peer-to-peer?

I"m at a loss on this. I actualy modified my firewall to forward ALL requests from one of my cable modes IP to the hosting cable modem machine and it still won't connect. I don't know enough about TCP/IP to understand the log, but here's what the firewall shows:

    19:30:40.624635 WAN 173-15-211-141-BusName-Atlanta.hfc.comcastbusiness.net, port 57241 c-76-97-141-51.hsd1.ga.comcast.net, port 10101 TCP

    173.15.211.141 is business cable modem
    76.97.141.51 is residential cable modem

This is a block in the log - what I do not understand is the source port being 57241 and the destination being the expected 10101 - but I suspect that's just my network ignorance.

I have tried reversing it as well as having one of my friends host on his machine. Both of us are quite knowledgable when it comes to this stuff and we can't get it working - I have active servers with forwarded ports working just fine right now.

I'd like to hear from someone using windows behind a firewall and what ports/issues they may have encountered.

Well we got it working in the wrong direction - I was able to get into a game being hosted by one of my players - so it would appear my firewall is the culprit. I'll just have to keep beating on it.

OK! Got it up and running and tested with two of my buds. We're going to talk it over a bit more but you should have three sales coming your way shortly!

Very curious to hear what the map bug ends up being.

Kerek, I believe that the hang up is a bug and it's been spotted once or twice now. Replication is a bit unreliable.

Our help site, http://help.mindgene.com should be pretty much up to date (except for the spells & effects section), with screen shots and sections covering most everything. Let us know where we can shore up development on it and we will get on that.

I should point out that the site is created with Google Sites, and it has the full power of Google search embedded in it. Just type your search at the top right corner:

I searched for Ownership and got: http://help.mindgene.com/system/app/pages/search?q=ownership, with the 3rd being a keyboard command list. Please let us know how we can make this easier for you or your group. We even offer training sessions for free - just say when!

Ack, apparently I have to chdeck notify me each time - have to take a look at my account settings.

Found the help and have been using it - we pretty much got it up and running and now just want to do a test combat over the phone using the system. D20Pro actually does much more than we intend to use - I really just want good shared mapping software. For me, as the DM, I'm also looking for easy inititaive/health tracking - D20Pro seems to have this. Once we are able to make our combat, we'll make a final decision on purchase - all in all, I am quite pleased with the reponse times and the way D20Pro works.

Heh, kewl on the training sessions.

    Thanks,
    EK
