This set up would be perfect for the sci fi boardgame/rpg hybrid known as battlestations:

Basically the game uses 2d6 + skill (combat, science, piloting, engineering, athletics, diplomacy, psionics) to resolve every check in the game. Each profession has a re-roll that lets you re-roll one of the dice for a skill check and each character has luck which is a pool of re-rolls for the mission. Each character also has a number of special abilities based on their rank, they also have hit points, and a target # to be hit.

If checks and attacks could be made with a 2d6 with re-rolls this platform is perfect since a program has already been made to create Jpegs of ship layouts and spacemaps.
