What's the likelihood, that there could be an aura (template) that can be either tethered or deployed, that automatically applies status effects to those in the area?

I'm thinking something along the lines of this

    Tethered
    1. A creature has an aura causing fear in all PCs within 15ft that fail a Will save which is defined when the creature is created in the library and the appropriate status icon is applied to the effect

    2. The creature enters the map and as soon as it's in 15ft from the PCs Saves are automatically rolled (like regular spell saves). Failed saves automatically apply the –2 penalty on all attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks and a status icon is added

    3. When the PCs step out of the aura, they automatically heal from the penalties and loose the status icon.

    Deployed
    1. A template is created that applies bless to all those in the area of the template.

    2. Functions exactly the same as above.

The aura could be have a visibility toggle so if someone detects magic they can see it

Right now you can do this in a very roundabout way. A light can be the aura (tethered to a creature or dropped) an at will ability needs to be created in either a dummy token or on a creature, then apply the status. It's just time consuming and clunky, this would work a lot smoother

Pretty high actually. The new "Feature Library" we're working on as part of the Rules API allows for templates which trigger on enter/exit/stay.
Additionally, templates can be moved. Right now we haven't applied tethering to the template system or effects to lights, but both of these are likely to be possible as we move forward.

Another place I want tethering is with map marker. Map Markers support animated gifs and with the 3.6.6.4 (just announced the beta) you can drop your image files into a folder in your ManuallySpecified directory to have immediate access. Then with the new scaling features you can make a marker just about any shape you want. What's cool about this is that a marker can then be a roiling cloud or a thin energy barrier.

To stay on topic though, Allowing a Marker to act as a template and be tethered would allow for you to have a region around your token which creates effects -- i.e. auras!

In the meantime, with the Feature Library, the GM can move the template by using the Template Mode in Game Tools. If an active effect template is moved during combat, all creatures now targeted would be subject to the template. The timer should continue to tick down from where it left off as well so this will act as a good stop gap until we get the base Feature Library completed.

Oh, and yes, Feature Library effects will be able to apply status to tokens in addition to ability, hp, save, etc. bonuses and penalties as well as damage and healing.

A spell defined using the Feature Library can have an area of effect template, a duration, a level/class dependent damage and saving throw as well as apply multiple effects such as: apply Poisoned status, cause ability damage, and apply a skill penalty

The combinations possible are quite vast actually.

Below is a very, very early preview of how this is shaping up. The UI doesn't reflect a lot of the functionality we're completing right now, but the general concept is well represented. Also, this is clearly NOT the production UI :) -- this is a pile of fields which have nearly no organization to speak of -- i.e. developer UI.

Cloudkill is one of the odd ducks in the OGL/SRD space as it has several conditional results including outright death. And it's an emanation from a central location which moves across the map each round. When we're done with this system, you'll be able to express spells like Cloudkill fairly accurately.

Adding Tethering of templates is definitely a must for this system.

Thraxxis has always referred to this work using the iceberg metaphore -- for every inch of visible code there's several feet of code below the surface. The Feature Library is more like plate tectonics.
