I have been playing with Fog of War with custom made maps. Personally, I just don't like having tons of white tiles on my custom maps. In dungeons I tried painting all the unused tiles black so it would be easier on the eye and found when I wanted to setup a nighttime encounter in a forest the fog of war was a problem.

Whenever I have fog of war on the hidden square doesn't show the tile graphic I painted on it so my green forest floor tunes into a plain white tile with FoW on. I believe that with imported map files FoW only seems to shade the map dim.

Is there some way in which I can have fog of war just dim/darken the parts it is in effect instead of canceling out my terrain?

I think you may be using the paint tool instead of Fog of War. The Fog of War is a semi-transparent black layer that covers all tiles but doesn't paint over them. You can still see everything. The paint tool shows a full palette of colors.
