Ok, i purchased a judge licence a couple weeks ago and have been trying like mad to get my comp to host for my players.

I have read through post after post and spent hours trying to get this thing to work (if i had any hair left i would have ripped it out by now!)

    Things i have done:
    1. Allowed exceptions for d20pro through the firewall and have even tried to shut it off completely
2a. went through the wonderful step by step of opening up a port through my router (Linksys router)
2b.even tried working with the DMZ
    3. Uninstalled my antivirus, (was having issues with it and it needed to be reinstalled anyway)

    Running Windows Vista Home Premium
    wired internet, Not using wireless
    linksys router

I have set up to have it use port 10101 and have been using canyouseeme.org to check but i still get Connection timed out
I must be missing something very simple, please if anyone can help, post asap!!!

Thank you very much in advance

Issue: Internet Service Provider OR Operating System blocking port.

Solution: IF Windows OS is blocking the port
Goto: Start > Control Panel > Firewall > Change Settings > Exceptions
Then: click on "Add Port" enter the appropriate value "10101" for TCP/UDP and click "OK" on all the dialog boxes.

If the above procedure does not help...
    Follow-up Question:
What Internet Service Provider are you using?

canyouseeme.org - good to see if your port is open - while you have the server program running (in this case d20Pro)

program on portforward.com - good to see if your computer is allowing that port to have access to your computer (while the server program -d20Pro is off).

If your port is listed closed using the program from portforward.com.... something on your computer is not allowing any programs to use the port in question. This is not a normal condition for a computer to do when all firewall and internet security is off... thus, even if you had all the correct settings in your router, the computer will still give you issues (which is what you've been having from the start it would seem).

In this case, it might be a good time to backup all important files, reinstall windows and all programs and try again (it seems like a good time to do this is now). Alternatively, you now know something on your computer is causing the port to be closed. You could further diagnose the issue and try to isolate the cause and try to fix it. As a last resort, you could look into the product they sell at portforward.com... however, I have never used it since if I run into this type of issue I would always start with a fresh backup/hd wipe/fresh install.

In the meantime, I would attach the router back in place and remove the DMZ. Also, reactivate your firewall since I strongly believe it has nothing to do with your ISP or router configuration.

ouch!! that is not the news that i was expecting......

I have done a wipe on my other comps more than once but on this one i have not. it is only about 20months old....

I want to do everything i can before resorting to that.

any suggestions of where to start other than uninstalling every program that i dont really use?

any particular program(s) that i should look for?

Nothing comes to mind. It would be nice to have a list of programs that could cause the issue you are experiencing. And if you are going to hunt it down until that PFPortChecker program sees an open port let us know which one(s) were preventing it and we can start a list.

As a side note, 20 months is about 6 months longer than my wipe/install cycle (14 months is my "time to wipe and reinstall everything").

Question.. is port 6774 open? I think that's the standard one for openrpg. If this is still open, use that port for your d20pro also. Just make sure when your players login, they also select the proper port before attempting to connect to the default port.

Make sure you followed the following...

    1) Ensure your router is configured correctly to forward port 10101 to your computer running d20Pro. For details on how to use port forwarding feature on your specific router visit: http://portforward.com/ Then select your router make and model from the list on the website, skip the advertisement, then click on "Default Guide" and follow along. (you must know your Local IP - you can get this from the d20Pro Options window, selecting Judge, then click on "What is my IP Address" )
    2) Allow d20Pro to communicate through Windows Firewall by Opening Windows Firewall. Click the Start button, click Control Panel, click Security, then click Windows Firewall. In the left pane, click Allow a program through Windows Firewall (If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Then select the check box next to d20Pro, and click OK. If d20Pro is not in the list, click Allow another program... then select d20Pro from the list and ensure both private an public settings are set, then click OK. (link)
    3) Open a port in Windows Firewall. Click the Start button, click Control Panel, click Secuirty, then click Windows Firewall. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Click Add port. In the Name box, type "port 10101". In the Port Number box, type "10101" Click TCP. Click Change Scope and set to both public and private. Click OK and click OK. Alternatively this can be done in Advanced Settings clicking Inbound Rules, then right-click New Rule, click Port, click Next, click TCP, enter the specific local ports as "10101", click Next, then Allow the Connection, click Next, select Domain Private and Public, click Next, Name the rule "port 10101", click Finish. (link)
    4) Restart your modem, your router, and your computer.

Note: Only use this next guide if you have exhausted the previous four actions:
    Perform a clean boot

    • Step 1
    • a. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
    • b. Click Start, type "msconfig.exe" in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration utility.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
    • c. On the General tab, click to select the option Selective startup, and then click to clear the option Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)
    • d. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.
Note: Following this step lets Microsoft services continue to run. These services include Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, Error Reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you may permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use the System Restore utility together with existing restore points.
    • e. Click OK, and then click Restart.

    After the computer restarts...
    1) Load d20Pro, enter as Judge, click on "Advanced" to ensure the port you are using is 10101, then click the green check mark to start your d20Pro server.
    2) Goto http://www.canyouseeme.org
    3) See if port 10101 is accessible from the internet

IF you get "Error: I could not see your service on ... on port (10101). Reason: Connection timed out." this means one of your Microsoft startup services is causing the issue. To fix this issue you must backup all data you want to keep, completely reformat your hard drive, reinstall windows and any programs you use, and restore your backup files.

IF you get "Success: I can see your service on ... on port (10101)" this means one of your non-Microsoft startup services is causing the issue. Lets find out which one...

    • Step 2: Enable half of the services
    • a. Follow steps 1a and 1b to start the System Configuration utility.
    • b. Click the Services tab, and then click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box.
    • c. Click to select half of the check boxes in the Service list.
    • d. Click OK, and then click Restart.

    • Step 3: Determine whether the problem returns
    • If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Service list.
    • If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Service list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.
    • If only one service is selected in the Service list, and you still experience the problem, the selected service causes the problem. Go to step 6. If no service causes this problem, go to step 4.

    • Step 4: Enable half of the Startup items
    • a. Perform a clean boot by repeating step 1.
    • b. Click the Startup tab, and then click to select half of the check boxes in the Startup Item list.
    • c. Click OK, and then click Restart.
    • d. Repeat the d20Pro Judge steps and see if port 10101 is visible on http://www.canyouseeme.org .

    • Step 5: Determine whether the problem returns
    • If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Startup Item list.
    • If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Startup Item list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.
    • If only one startup item is selected in the Startup Item list, and you still experience the problem, the startup item that is selected in the list is the service that is causing the problem. Go to step 6.
    • If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.

    • Step 6: Resolve the problem
    • After you determine the startup item or the service that causes the problem, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether the problem can be resolved. Or, run the System Configuration utility, and then click to clear the check box for the problem item.

    • Step 7: Reset the computer to start as usual
After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:
    • a. Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
    • b. On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.
    • c. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

We had a similar issue and was able to use the check tool from portforward.com to find the problem. I also used TCP view from sysinternals.com to watch the port connections. I have a Cisco router and the DMZ setting alone did not work, the port forwarding on tcp 10101 did not work. But using both of them did allow connections.

After working with Edward and hearing out his advice, I am looking at reformatting my HD and starting over. My question is, could reimaging be an option. (not that I have ever done that before, nor do i know if there was an image made before i received my comp from dell)

    Alright, here is my update.

    What I have:
    Vista Home Premium
    Linksys router

    What I have done:
    Formatted my HD
    Reinstalled Vista
    Ran all the updates
    Installed D20Pro
    Installed MSN Messenger
    Enabled port forwarding
Allowed through firewall and have even tried shutting off firewall
    Shouted
    Pleaded
Shook some chicken bones over it

I am still not able to get my port to be accessed through canyouseeme.org
    I am at a loss.......

Are you sure it is not your router?

Two games into my campaign, I had huge issues with seeing the 10101 poert. I eventually bypassed the router and went straight through the modem and got my connection. Afterward, I discovered that my router (Older Linksys N-Draft Router=Cisco) was dying. I switched to my even older Linksys WRT54G router and got one more session out of it before it was in death throws. I now have the ASUS RT-N16 flashed with Tomato USB and everything runs fantastically. My point is, I loved my Linksys router(s) but it was their slow failure that was causing all of my issues (been 2 games since and had no network issues - player issues - but not from the network). So I would bypass your Router and go through the Modem and see if your problem is still arround.

Also, have you tried enabling a DMZ on your Router. I did have to do that with my new one.

    Just my two cents. :D

See if a friend can do a traceroute to your External IP on port 10101 and note where the packets are being dropped. It may not even be your systems at all and the ISP may be dropping the packets on that port. If so, you can always use a different port. Also, ensure you are running bare minimum software while testing as plenty of software sets up firewalls and route tables without you knowing as they are trying to make their software work with as little fuss from the end user as possible.

It sounds like a similar problem I had. Ended up removing the router from the equation and going directly through the modem. I did however have to configure port forwarding through the router. I have DSL and I believe you said you had cable, so you may have to get the info from your ISP on how to get into the router. It's similar to getting into the Linksys routers and making changes, so if that's the problem, you should be up and running in now time. Also, always make sure to have d20pro running when you check for the port being opened.
